And the 2016 winners are…

The winners of the South Australian Food Industry Awards were announced on 25 November 2016 at a glittering Gala Dinner attended by a record audience at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Almost 700 guests were present to celebrate the industry’s night of nights hosted by Food South Australia, and the size of the audience wasn’t the only record broken by the Awards program, now in its 18th year.

“The South Australian Food Industry Awards Program represents an important opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of South Australia’s largest, and fastest growing industry sector, and entries were up by 10% this year,” Food South Australia CEO Catherine Sayer said.

Golden North’s position as an industry leader and consumer favourite was cemented when the Laura-based business began the evening as the latest inductee to the San Remo Hall of Fame, and rounded it off by collecting the hotly contested Tasting Australian Consumer Award. Golden North now produces more than 80 different products, including Australia’s only certified Low GI ice cream.

Ray Borda was awarded the Bickford’s Australia Leader Award for his efforts establishing and guiding the growth of the Australian kangaroo meat industry, while Adelaide’s Queen of Cheese, Kris Lloyd, was recognised for her entrepreneurial expertise, including founding the South Australian Cheesemakers Association and the ever-popular CheeseFest Cheese Festival.

This year’s winners included some young businesses punching above their weight in a very competitive industry. Natural Fractions won two innovation awards for their development of a high efficiency fractionation system to produce pure essences. Bultarra Australian Saltbush Lamb also collected two awards on the night, as the winner of the Primary Industries and Regions South Australia Regional Award and the Visy Export Award for businesses with 15 FTEs or less, in recognition of their stellar business growth supplying certified organic saltbush lamb around the world and particularly to the United States, Dubai and Japan.

Northern Adelaide business Sunfresh Salads were also multiple winners, collecting awards for innovation, and the coveted Foodland SA new Product Award for their Down To Earth warm salad pot range, as were the family-owned and operated farm gate meat producers Wakefield Grange, who won both the Thomas Foods International Primary Producer Award and the Peats Soil and Garden Supplies Sustainability Award for businesses with 15 or fewer FTEs, and Almondco Australia, who won the Visy Export Award (over 15 FTEs) and the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science Skills Development Recognition Award.

Other award winners included: AgriExchange, MOO Premium Foods, Pangkarra Foods, Fleurieu Milk Company, Spring Gully Foods and B.-d Farm Paris Creek. A new award for Service Providers to the food industry saw Galipo Foods and 2XE recognised for their contribution to the success of their food industry clients.

“South Australia’s food and beverage businesses are a shining example of the dedication and determination small and medium business enterprises make to the economic future of this state every day,” said Catherine.
